Cooling gel patches make use of gel technology to provide long-lasting cooling relief for various types of inflammatory conditions and pain. Here we answer some frequently asked questions about these patches:
01. How do they work?
The patches contain concentrated hydrogel which has a high water content. Along with cooling agents like menthol and mint, the hydrogel provides a rapid cooling effect of around 2-4 degrees Celsius when applied to the skin. This cold therapy reduces swelling and pain.
02. Are they reusable?
Most cooling gel patches are meant for single use only and lose their cooling ability after 8-12 hours. Do not reuse patches as the matrix breaks down affecting performance and hygiene. Some brands however can be stretched and reapplied. Refer to instructions.
03. Can I use them with medication?
Yes, cooling patches can provide additional relief from pain and are safe to use with oral medication or topical analgesics like diclofenac gel. Discontinue use if skin becomes excessively cold, numb or irritated.
04. How long can I apply them?
It is recommended to use cooling patches for 2-3 times across 24 hours, for 3-4 days at most. Long term use without breaks can damage skin tissue. Take a break of a few hours between applications and remove immediately if worsened symptoms are noticed.
By following directions of use, cooling gel patches are generally safe complementary therapy for pain management. As always, consult your doctor if you have any medical concerns.
